What is the significance of hand gestures used in meditation by buddhists and in Hindu Yoga?

These mudras are basically symbolic of doing certain things. Especially in meditation, one does not want to get up to make offerings or so, but one can make offerings symbolically by making a few hand gestures or mudras.
