Christians - Buddhists, can you explain this?

In both religions, in order to get close to God or achieve nirvana, one must rid oneself of all desires for earthly things. Yet, we are encouraged to pray (or chant) for our Earthly needs and we will be given them if we have faith. Why? We can never achieve spiritual perfection if we are concerned with "stuff."
